As women during the time of the month (period), we can feel extremely uncomfortable, watery, fat, lethargic and swollen in some cases in a lot of pain.
Recently I have experienced all the above and was intrigued by why I was feeling so awful and what can I implement in the upcoming months to help prevent this feeling or soothe it. I started my research.
Below explains the cycle in a simple form, why we get the feelings we do and tips to help in the future.
Our bodies can start increasing water retention 2 - 3 weeks before our actual period. You may get a day or so where you feel this discomfort of water retention, but this isn’t where it is at its highest. Coming closer to the due date is where we start to produce a high amount of estrogen, this is where ovulation is at its all-time high and where you will feel most bloated. Then progesterone replaces estrogen - you may feel a little better less bloated. Process of bleeding begins - the unfertilized eggs are released causing bleeding - and this is where most women feel all side effects such as weight gain, headaches, lethargy, cramps, hurting breasts, achy back.
Why is there an increase in water retention & bloating
For me, this is the main one! So why do we feel like we have gained weight?
1. A big change in hormone release: as the estrogen creeps in, the body naturally gains water and therefore causes bloating.
2. We tend to not drink enough water: I know I am guilty of this; the body holds on to what it has - leading to water retention.
3. Our metabolism rate increases, this leads to cravings and an increase in food consumption with high sodium which makes us retain water.
4 We can also experience gas build-up: from not being as active and can experience constipation.
How to prevent water retention
1. Staying hydrated will help your body get rid of excess sodium and prevent dehydration at this point in time.
2. Exercise is extremely important during this time of the month - it will help keep water retention low.
3. Diet: stay away from high sugar foods and high-calorie carbohydrates because these will excel the water gain.
4. Limit caffeine, but if you use it to keep it in daily, as caffeine is a natural diuretic and will help with the water retention.
5. Vitamins/supplements: calcium prevents water retention. If you don’t get enough through your diet, be sure to use a supplement. Also, potassium helps regulate fluid - you can also get this in foods like bananas, raisins, and tomatoes.

Top 5 Tips for Home Workouts During a Quarantine Hey Guys, working out from home has been a funny one for everyone I have seen recently on social media. The adjustment has been odd, but I have seen nothing but positive feedback and energy from all like-minded people helping each other out in these times. Below are a few things I have been implementing for myself that have made a big difference so I'd like to share them with you.
Many years ago, back when I was 16 I totally removed all dairy and meat product’s from my diet. I went a vegan for around one year purely because I didn’t like the texture meat or the idea of eating any animal products, also because it was easier to prepare food. Back then I did not have the knowledge on the nutrition of what foods or supplement’s I should use to replace the lack of essential vitamins I was not getting from my vegan diet, which was what I thought was just removing all meat and dairy products. After a few months on this diet, it really showed in my health inside and out, I became scrawny, extremely flat-chested, my body was undernourished because of my diet was lacking important nutrients, my diet was so unhealthy, and it showed.
